How Deposit Limits Work at Licensed Casinos
Deposit limits are one of the few player protection tools that every licensed Canadian operator must offer. They cap the amount a player can pay into an account over a day, a week or a month, and they are designed so that lowering a limit is easy while raising one is deliberately slow.
Setting a limit
Limits are set in the account area and take effect immediately when they are lowered. In Ontario, operators regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission must prompt new players to set a limit during registration rather than leaving the option buried in a settings page. Provincial sites run by lottery corporations follow similar rules.
Why raising a limit takes time
A request to increase a limit does not apply straight away. Most regulators require a waiting period of at least 24 hours, and some operators use longer windows. The delay exists so that a decision made during a losing session cannot be acted on in the same session. A player who changes their mind during the waiting period can cancel the increase.
Limits and bonuses
A deposit limit counts real money paid in, not bonus funds or winnings that are wagered again. Operators are not allowed to offer a bonus in exchange for raising a limit, and marketing that encourages players to deposit more than their set limit is treated as a breach of licence conditions.
Together with loss limits and session timers, deposit limits give players a simple way to decide in advance how much gambling fits into their budget. Regulators check that these tools are easy to find and that lowering a limit never requires contacting support.
